Despite what you may have been led to believe, yoga is not just for the extremely flexible!  In fact, quite the contrary!  It can be as gentle or as challenging as you’d like to make it.  It can be used for everything from stress reduction to pain relief to weight loss, and multiple things in between.

YOGA TRULY IS FOR EVERYBODY!

You are no exception to this rule!  If you’ve been wondering why everybody is so obsessed with it, maybe now is the time to try it for yourself.  My private yoga instruction is tailored specifically to your needs and desired outcome.  I incorporate elements of meditation, breathwork, movement, theory, and sound to create a practice that can powerfully transform your mind, body, and spirit.

What is Yoga?

The word yoga translates to “to yoke”.  It is essentially the practice of uniting the mind, the body, and the spirit.  This union is achieved through exploration of the 8 limbs of yoga, as outlined in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras more than 2,000 years ago.  These limbs include the yamas (restraints), the niyamas (observances), asana (postures), pranayama (breathwork), pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses), dharana (concentration), dhyani (meditation), and samadhi (absorption).  The most common practice in Western yoga is asana, or the postures.  This is typically what most people think of when they hear the word yoga.

What Can Yoga Help With?

Yoga can be helpful in many situations.  It can help to alleviate pain, encourage weight loss, calm your mental chatter, ease depression, and improve your internal functioning.  The fact that the  tradition has been around for over 5,000 years (potentially 10,000) is a true testament to the very real benefits it offers.

What Are the Overall Benefits of Starting a Practice?

The benefits of a yoga practice are abundant, even if you are only practicing an hour a week.  The list could really go on and on.  Here are a few very real benefits you are likely to experience:

  • Physical Body:  Your physical body will certainly benefit from starting a practice.  You can look forward to increased flexibility and strength, as well as increased muscle tone.  Yoga can also be used to help meet your weight loss goals and improve your athletic performance.
  • Internal Systems:  It will improve your respiration, increase your energy levels, and help to balance and maintain your metabolism.  Your circulatory system will also benefit greatly.
  • Mental Benefits:  Yoga helps exponentially in calming the mind.  By placing focus on your breath, both through movement and stillness, you will learn in time to quiet the endless chatter of your thoughts.  This leads to improved concentration, clarity, decreased worry and anxiety, and a greater sense of overall well-being.

Why Private Yoga Instruction?

There are many reasons that you may choose to take private yoga instruction as opposed to group classes.  Here are a few of the more common:

  • Confidence:  If you are just beginning your yoga practice, you probably don’t yet know most of the yoga postures.  This can lead to feelings of insecurity in a group setting, which is no way to fall in love with yoga.  A skilled instructor will maneuver you through some of the basic postures to increase confidence.
  • Safety:  Working in a one-on-one setting will help you learn proper alignment within each posture.  This greatly diminishes the chance of injury.
  • Personal Goals:  Taking yoga privately will ensure that your personal goals are being met during sessions.  There is no guessing whether a class will resonate or not because you have already explained to your instructor what you are trying to gain from your practice.  As your goals change, a private yoga instructor will change their approach to evolve with you.
  • Time:  When the instructor is coming to you, you don’t have to worry about racing around to get to a class on time.  Private instruction works with your particular schedule.
  • Deepening Your Practice:  If you are a more experienced yogi, working with a private instructor can help to deepen your understanding of the yoga practice, taking it to an entirely new level of devotion.

Other FAQ

Is it a religion?  Yoga, in an of itself, is not a religion.  It is, however, a philosophy that was adopted by many of the religions that emerged from Vedic India.  A practice can be different things for different people.  For some, it is solely a means of physical exercise.  For others, it is a practice of the mind, and for others yet, it is a spiritual practice.  There is no wrong or right way to practice your own yoga.  It does not clash with any religions or encourage its participants to give up on their religious beliefs.  Anybody and everybody can practice and benefit from it.

Do I have to be a vegetarian to practice? This may sound funny, but I actually get this question a lot.  The answer is NO!  I, personally, am not a vegetarian or a vegan and nobody has shunned me yet!  Be yourself…yoga is for everybody.

How often should I practice?  There’s no right or wrong answer here!  See?  This is already way easier than you thought!  Your practice can fit into any schedule, as even 10 minutes a day or an hour a week is beneficial.  Obviously, the more you practice, the more benefits you will see, but you have to start somewhere, right?
